The Crow's Nest
There is nothing like wind, springtime allergies, telephone reminders of commitments and various other demands that can bring a rude awakening! I had wrapped myself in a cocoon of an idyllic, dream life that I didn’t want to escape when reality hit. My dream world was in Bavaria, Germany. Chuck and I along with brother, Dave and wife, Loretta just returned from a whirlwind 8 day visit to Germany. We stayed in little village gasthaus’ where we enjoyed walking through the villages drinking in the beauty of the countryside. Bavaria is like looking at ink drawings of fairy tales that begin “Once Upon a Time”. There is green, green, green grass everywhere, half-timbered homes and homes decorated on the exterior with Bauernmalari (Barn Painting). There are barns attached to the houses and cattle with cowbells. And then, there are the flowers – flowers that spill from high on window sills to flowers along pathways, doors and in gardens. But, the best part was the food! We were there for “Spargel” season. That is white asparagus. Most every gasthaus had a special “Spargel” Menu where one could order it fixed innumerable ways. I ordered my beloved schnitzel every night and enjoyed every single bite I took! David on the other hand seemed to be most pleased the night he ordered a hamburger steak and got it served with a fried egg on top!
We had a wonderful time visiting cathedrals, castles and wending our way through Bavaria on the Romantic Strasse. I saw Germany in a whole different light as Loretta noticed the forest management, the use of wind turbines, the intense recycling, the “pitch” of the roofs and so many details that had never entered my mind before. A big plus for Chuck and I was to have dinner one night with friends of ours, John and Linda Cummings who live in Wurzburg. Twenty three years just peeled back as we reminisced about our kids and the fun times we had together.
It is always good to come home. Trinity WELCA had its annual Spring Brunch this past Saturday with about 75 ladies in attendance. The Spring Breakfast/Brunch has been held for at least the last 40 years or so. I guess it is becoming a tradition!
Market on Main held their Customer Appreciation Day while we were away. Ruthie said they served something like 230 people hamburgers and bratwursts. It is so much fun to go into the store and see what is new.
The orioles are back and seem to enjoy grape jelly now as much as they did last year. Orlando stayed busy making sure the orioles got their jelly while we were gone. I think I went through 80 cups of sugar last year making the jelly for the birds. Gets to be an expensive bird feed, but it is worth it to watch them come to eat.
Congratulations to Jill and Shane Waslaski on the birth of their little boy, Harrison Graham. Grandma Mary (Langerud) says little Harry’s big sister, Maggie is very pleased with the new addition.
Congrats also goes to all the seniors graduating this Saturday. I’m sure the last 13 years have just flown by.
